I suspect, where we are heading, realistically, is a federated solution, not a “fake-decentralized” one where each node replicates the work done by every other node. The problem, IMHO, is that people are convinced that bitcoin/ethereum way is the right way to go, so the world is spending a tremendous amount of energy going full-steam-ahead in the wrong direction.
