Many forms of government have been attempted over the course of millennia of human civilization. I hate to be a downer, but every single form of government attempted so far has already failed at least once in the past. This is why we speak of “ancient Greece”, “old Rome”, “ancient Mesopotamian civilizations”, “ancient American civilizations”, “ancient Chinese civilizations”, etc. — because in each case, those states were replaced by something else, something different enough that no state today can claim to be the same as their “ancient” counterpart.
Many try. For example, China is trying to emphasize its ancient Han roots. But as you have probably noticed, there hasn’t been an Emperor in China for a while — only the Chinese Communist Party. However, Mao’s Communist Revolution, or, as the Chinese call it, the War Of Liberation (1949), didn’t end the Emperor’s rule. The beginning of the end of the reign of the Qing Dynasty[1] was a popular uprising in 1911. What was it about? Railways. Seriously[2].
Some of the old civilizations were ended by conquests. Others fell apart due to plagues. But many, many of them ended with uprisings. And if you follow the history of the Chinese revolutions, or the French revolutions, or the Russian Socialist Revolution, or the American War of Independence, or pretty much any other revolution, uprising or coup d’état you care to look at, you will, in large part, find the same story: it…
